When visiting Tuscany, no accomodation is better than a holiday farmhouse. Grosseto, the capital of Maremma, and its region is well-known for the great numbers of farmhouses. Grosseto itself is an interesting town, rich with artistic and historical monuments, as most of the Tuscany towns are. Churches and palaces in Grosseto have lived and transformed themselves throughout the centuries: they host different masterworks of important Tuscan painters and sculptors, ranging from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The typical brick walls surround the historic part of the town and provides it with a romantic and dreaming-like atmosphere.
A farmhouse holiday in Tuscany, near Grosseto, is the best way to discover all the traditions of Maremma. Among the local events, takes a special place the ancient ceremony of "la Merca", the livestock branding. La Merca is performed as a sort of rural festivity during spring (traditionally on the 1st of May) in Alberese, a site inside the natural park Parco dell'Uccellina. We can especially point out the Val d'Orcia area as a territory where culinary arts have stayed especially loyal to the tradition: the local food tradition is indeed a wholesome and tasty one. In this well reknowned area in the province of Grosseto the main food courses are rustic dishes, made with simple, but high quality produce coming from the local countryside. Probably the most famous one is the classical fiorentina steak, a large steak, brushed with olive oil and aromatic herbs, and cooked on the grill over chestnut wood.

The range of typical food produce and dishes is huge, but we can suggest a special treat, once reserved to the noble class of the region, despite its name: the fisherman fettuccine ("fettuccine del pescatore"). The main ingredients are scampi, oysters, arugula, salt, pepper, garlic and extra-virgin olive oil: a festival for seafood lovers! If you prefer more "earthy" flavours, you can ask your farmhouse's landlord in Grosseto: fragrant wild mushrooms are widely common in the Maremma country and they are the basic ingredient for a homemade mushroom soup, best accompanied by garlic bread and parmigiano reggiano.
