  • If you choose to spend your farmhouse holiday near Grosseto, you'll get acquainted with the flavoured and rustic food of Maremma. The main courses are based on meat (coming from the local cattle breeding), wild birds and the famous Maremma wild boar. These earthy courses are best accompanied by the local Morellino di Scansano, one the most famous red wines in Tuscany, a perfect match for a complete Maremma-style meal (pappardelle, crostini, bread soup...). And for a light and refreshing aperitif, we suggest the Bianco di Pitigliano, a brilliant white wine which can compete with Prosecco.

When visiting Tuscany, no accomodation is better than a holiday farmhouse. Grosseto, the capital of Maremma, and its region is well-known for the great numbers of farmhouses. Grosseto itself is an interesting town, rich with artistic and historical monuments, as most of the Tuscany towns are. Churches and palaces in Grosseto have lived and transformed themselves throughout the centuries: they host different masterworks of important Tuscan painters and sculptors, ranging from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The typical brick walls surround the historic part of the town and provides it with a romantic and dreaming-like atmosphere.

A farmhouse holiday in Grosseto means enjoying fully the culinary tradition of Tuscany Maremma. The range of typical food produce and dishes is huge, but we can suggest a special treat, once reserved to the noble class of the region, despite its name: the fisherman fettuccine ("fettuccine del pescatore"). The main ingredients are scampi, oysters, arugula, salt, pepper, garlic and extra-virgin olive oil: a festival for seafood lovers! If you prefer more "earthy" flavours, you can ask your farmhouse's landlord in Grosseto: fragrant wild mushrooms are widely common in the Maremma country and they are the basic ingredient for a homemade mushroom soup, best accompanied by garlic bread and parmigiano reggiano.

If you choose a holiday farmhouse for your vacation near Grosseto, you can't skipped a visit to the wonderful medieval town of Pitigliano. Pitigliano is a little gem, built on a tuff rock steep, displaying a magical landscape which is one of the most photographed in Europe. The town shows historical records tracking back to all the different historical eras since pre-history: the Etruscan civilization, the Roman civilization, the Aldobrandeschi period (Aldobrandeschi family reigned over Maremma for nearly five centuries), the magnificent Renaissance period ruled by the Orsini family and the final Medici and Lorena dominations. One the principal monuments in Grosseto is the Orsini palace, which hosts an Etruscan Museum with interesting findings from the archeological site of Statonia.
